What is REU?
REU stands for research experience for undergraduates. This program allows for undergraduates students to experience real research over the summer in a research field of their choice. This is is a great option for those looking to get into R&D positions or graduate school.
Chemistry REU
Students Transforming Energy and Environmental Research (STEER) is a National Science Foundation–funded Research Experience for Undergraduates at Virginia Tech that immerses students in cutting-edge solutions to energy and environmental challenges. Participants work alongside leading faculty and graduate mentors on projects spanning batteries, catalysis, water purification, solar fuels, and sustainable materials.
Designed with chemical engineering students in mind, STEER emphasizes hands-on research in energy systems, materials, and environmental processes while also building skills in scientific communication, leadership, and career development. Students gain access to world-class facilities and contribute to impactful research in areas like energy storage, resource management, and environmental remediation.
Through mentorship, professional training, and a collaborative research environment, STEER prepares the next generation of engineers and scientists to drive innovation in sustainable energy and environmental technologies.

Fralin Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship (SURF)
Fralin Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship (SURF) offers Virginia Tech undergraduates the opportunity to engage in immersive, full-time research in the life sciences. Open to students exploring careers in research, the 10-week program pairs fellows with faculty mentors to conduct hands-on projects across a wide range of life science disciplines.
SURF is designed for students ready to commit fully to research, with an emphasis on rising second- and third-year students who are building foundational experience. Participants dedicate 40 hours per week to their projects, gaining valuable skills in experimental design, critical thinking, and scientific communication.
Students interested in biotechnology can leverage SURF to gain practical experience in areas such as molecular biology, bioprocessing, bioengineering, and translational research. Working alongside faculty, fellows develop skills relevant to the biotech industry, including laboratory techniques, data analysis, and collaborative research—preparing them for careers in pharmaceuticals, biotech startups, and applied life sciences.
With strong mentorship, structured expectations, and a focus on professional growth, SURF provides a rigorous and rewarding pathway for students preparing for graduate school, medical school, or research-driven careers in the life sciences.
